10 Students Bag First Class At Nigeria Turkish Nile University

No fewer than 10 graduating students bagged first class degrees at the 2nd convocation of the Nigeria Turkish Nile University in Abuja on Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Huseyin Sert, said the 181 graduating students justified the vision and mission statement of the institution.

According to him, the goal of the university is to produce quality graduates skillful and experience to contribute to the technological and economic development of Nigeria and the globe.

Sert urged the graduating students to give back to the society by bringing their knowledge to bear in all their endeavours.

“We urge you to be sensitive and competent in solving the problems of Africa and the world; you owe your country the duty to project its image positively.

“You are the future leaders of your country and the world is waiting for you to explore and make meaningful impact,” he said.

He said the institution showcased the vast potential of Nigeria to the world through the hosting of the recent International Science Olympiad, 2014.

Sert said the institution provided scholarship to students from Nigeria and other countries who won medals at the competition.

“Our university started in 2009 and today all our departments have been fully accredited by National Universities Commission.

“Arrangements are in the top gear to establish new departments as well as our post-graduate school,’’ Sert said.

He said that arrangements had been concluded to start medicine and law faculties by September in order to meet the academic yearnings of Nigerians.

On his part, President Goodluck Jonathan, said the university was complementing the efforts of government toward providing quality education to its citizens.

Represented by Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Jonathan urged the graduating students to add value to the society.

“Deploy your knowledge and skills to develop our nation; break new grounds in science and technology so that the much needed jobs shall be created.

“We must move our focus from the acquisition of certificates to that of skills development,’’ Jonathan said.

According to him, government is partnering with the private sector in the development of education and has approved five new private universities.

Mr Modupe Kolawole, who spoke on behalf of parents, implored the graduating students not to betray the confidence reposed in them.

A first class recipients, Hussein Abubakar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he recorded the result because hard work and dedication to his studies.

The highlight of the event was the conferment of honorary doctorate degree on Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe and the Director-General State Security Services, Ita Ekpeyong. (NAN)
