Experiences with Hizmet and the Followers of Fethullah Gülen

Leo D. Lefebure

Since the 1990s, I have been involved in a variety of dialogues with Muslims in the United States and around the world. When I moved to Georgetown University in the summer of 2005, I became acquainted with the members of the Rumi Forum in Washington, DC, which is affiliated with the international Islamic movement known as Hizmet, a Turkish word that means “Service.” Since the movement is inspired by the example and writings of Turkish Muslim leader Fethullah Gülen, outside observers often refer to this as “the Gülen movement.” At the time I moved to Washington, DC, the director of the Rumi Forum was Ali Yurtsever, a dynamic, friendly leader with a seemingly insatiable interest in interreligious dialogue and friendship.

Hüseyin Gülerce

Centers and circles of power that fail to understand or accept the transition from guardianship to democracy, from old Turkey to new Turkey -- in other words, the great transformation -- are now trying new methods of stalling the process. Yonca Poyraz Doğan

Jenny White (Photo: Today's Zaman)
According to Jenny White, an anthropologist specializing in Turkey, Turkey's national identity has been in a process of redefinition, and during this process the notion of Muslimhood has replaced Islamism.

“Muslimhood implies a different understanding of personhood. If you are a pious Muslim and you enter politics, the assumption is that you become an Islamist. But the theologians behind the Muslimhood model ask: ‘Why should that be so? Do Christian politicians become Christianists when they enter politics?'” she told Today's Zaman for Monday Talk.

Love and Truth in Democratic Societies: Fethullah Gülen and Pope Benedict XVI on Social Questions

Thomas Michel

On June 29, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI issued a new encyclical letter entitled Caritas in Veritate, that is, Love in Truth or "Truth-filled Love." This letter was directed to Christians and to all those who are interested in facing seriously questions regarding democracy, justice, and development in our modern world. The influential Muslim scholar Fethullah Gulen, whose thought we are studying in this Congress, has also written extensively on many of these topics. In keeping with the Congress theme of "East and West Encounters," I will try to bring together the views of these two religious leaders in a type of "dialogue of ideas."
