US Congress members: Turkey, US partnership gets stronger
Today's Zaman
Representatives of the US Congress have said in Washington, D.C., that the partnership between Turkey and the United States is getting stronger as the Turkish democracy is a “shining model of strength” earned by basic freedoms and democracy at a time of Arab awakening.
Speaking at the "2011 Annual Congress, New Challenges-New Opportunities" co-hosted by the Turkic American Alliance (TAA) and the Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists of Turkey (TUSKON), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said on Wednesday that Turkey's economy and regional leadership brought benefits not only to the Turkish people but also to the countries going through the Arab Spring and Turkey's ally, the United States.

Main characteristics of the Gülen movement and the importance of education in globalising world
Prof. Dr. İsmail Albayrak *
While the cry for democratic values, human rights and intercultural dialogue is frequently heard, the global threat of war, terrorism, the increased gap between poor and rich, famine, malnutrition, global warming and pollution, and many other social and cultural problems, pose a real challenge for present citizens of the globe. To tackle these challenges is the prime concern of today’s intellectuals and politicians. Despite the existence of some pessimists, there are a number of initiatives working for the common good and expending great effort to eradicate these problems. The Gülen movement is one of the most influential initiatives which should be taken into consideration in this context. The question of how the formal and informal educational activities of the movement contribute to the solution of local and global problems is the second concern of this paper. Finally, as an extension of the movement’s global educational activities, the paper deals with Gülen’s approach to cultural and religious diversity and their relationship in modern societies.

Dispensing with the Turkish model
İhsan Yılmaz
CAIRO - After learning that I was in Egypt not only for research but also for academic collaboration, the manager in the famous Al Burg restaurant told me that Egypt and Turkey also need to collaborate, but it should be on the basis of equality not Turkey's imposition of its model on Egypt.
That seems to be a sentiment shared by many Egyptians. Almost all of them are curious about the Turkish experience, but they are quick to underline that the Egyptian case is different. The people I have spoken to -- ranging from the old elite to Hizb al-Wasat members, from independent intellectuals to Ikhwan activists -- gave me the impression that they were not happy with an imposition of a model on their country that they suspected has some Western backing too.
