Turkish school officials visit Ethiopian Prime Minister

Today's Zaman

Board members from the International Necaşi Turkish College, established in Addis Ababa seven years ago, recently paid an office visit to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi Asres.

Head of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Zenawi said he closely followed the activities of Turkish schools in Ethiopia, expressing gratitude to those who supported the educational institutions, which contribute to world peace. He also said that he had heard only positive things about Turkish schools in the international arena.

Referring to Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” thesis being fashionable in current times and the disorder surfacing in many parts of the world, the Ethiopian prime minister described his stance on the issue, saying, “I am all for dialogue.” His meeting with the school officials lasted for nearly an hour.

Describing the important function Turkish schools worldwide have in engendering world harmony and understanding, Zenawi said that education alone was not enough to overcome the problems facing states and world citizens but that the issue of dialogue initiatives between nation-states needed to be addressed.

Providing information about the educational institutions established by the Turkish community in Ethiopia, Necaşi College General Director Murat Yıldırım said there were four schools with a total of 535 students and went on to describe their social activities and achievements. Talking about all four schools’ shift to using SMART boards in all classrooms within the next two weeks, Yıldırım said that they were striving to be the top African school in terms of educational resources.
