Imran Khan says closure of Gulen Schools could be disastrous

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan Sunday said that closure of Gulen Schools in Pakistan could be disastrous for the country.
In a tweet, he said: “While we stand firmly behind Turkish democracy, closing Pak-Turk schools in Pakistan, which has a high illiteracy rate, could be disastrous”.

As many as 21 schools in Pakistan are being run by Turkey’s Gulen Movement, a group which is blamed for last week’s failed coup attempt by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Another entity, Rumi Forum, is also controlled and run by the same Turkish organisation.

Imran Khan’s statement about the closure of the schools came as Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Sadik Babur Girgin told newsmen on Friday that Ankara had asked all friendly nations to prevent activities of this (Gulen) group.

To a question, the Ambassador said that Ankara was also in touch with Pakistani authorities regarding the presence of the Gulen Schools in Pakistan.
